We normally expect students to have a First or Upper Second class honours degree or its overseas equivalent, with experience related to Egyptology.

An overall grade of 7.0 in IELTS with 7.0 in writing an no skill below 6.5 is required or 100+ in the TOEFL iBT with a minimum writing score of 25 and no skill below 22.

If you have obtained a different qualification, please check our   to ensure that it is accepted and equivalent to the above requirements.

Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2026, the tuition fees are as follows:

• MA (part-time distance learning)
  UK students (per annum): £6,300
  International, including EU, students (per annum): £6,300

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Applications are mainly considered on the basis of an assessment of past and predicted academic achievements, the academic reference(s) and any other supplementary evidence that supports the application.

We strongly recommend you include a personal statement (no more than 500 words) that demonstrates your understanding of the subject and your motivation for wanting to study the programme.

Year 1

You will take two mandatory research skills units to help you formulate an effective research strategy for your dissertation and further academic career, alongside three mandatory units on significant aspects of Egyptian culture, history and archaeology.

• Academic Skills and Research Design in Egyptian Archaeology Part 1 (30 credits)
• Historical Studies in Ancient Egypt (15 credits)
• Academic Skills and Design in Egyptian Archaeology Part 2 (15 credits)
• Art and Artists in Ancient Egypt (15 credits)
• Urbanism in Ancient Egypt (15 credits)

Year 2

You will select two optional units on Egyptian language, art, culture and religion from the list below.

• Ancient Egyptian Religion and Funerary Beliefs (15 credits)
• Gender and Identity in Ancient Egypt (15 credits)
• The Amarna Period (15 credits)
• Fast-track Middle Egyptian (15 credits)

The second semester of Year 2 is dedicated to researching and writing the final 12,000-word dissertation (60 credits).
